RE: Ten days on the road.

What a great trip with beautiful pictures! It's sure looked like fun. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.
Those fires..I remember them well. Those of us living in these here mountains were evacuated twice in the last 5 years!

RE: I just couldn't do it...

Why not use it as a kind of 'guest-house' semi-permanently set-up in the backyard? Place a vapor barrier under the unit to keep it from decaying too quickly.
BTW: nice pix of the gardens surrounding your home!
Cheers,
Silver-
Silversand,
That's exactly what I did. Where it sits there is a nice view of the lake from the dinette, kitchen and cabover windows. I almost camped in it last night myself
It's now called "Dak's Tropical Mountain Pardise Guest House". (That's the name of my gardens) Nightly rates are cheap!:B
Thanks for the compliment on my gardens. They are another one of my passions! The new name for the camper comes from the name of my gardens. I was on the garden tour 2 years ago and had to come up with a name..
Cheers,

I just couldn't do it...

After reading Joe's post, and after a lot of soul searching, even though I have a travel trailer now, I just can't sell the old Lance. I just love that stupid old camper :) and it looks so perfect inside, even with the leaking and rot outside. I began cleaning it out to day and took it off the truck for the first time in a number of years. While cleaning it out I just decided that I would just keep it and sorta "mount" it in a military ammo trailer that my stepfather gave me years ago. I have it set up now as a guest house and "get away" for me in the driveway. I put the jacks down and will just park it for a few years. Thank goodness I have a long drive! I'll tarp it in the winter and as Joe said, I will work on it at my leisure.. Thanks Joe!
I'll be deleting the for sale ad now...:B
Now we're a 2 RV family!

RE: Bye bye Old Lance.... :-(

Thanks all for the kind words. Guess I will keep posting here because as I said before, it really is the best forum!
kcabpilot,
Love your old truck! I'll never sell mine...(famous last words, right?...
Hi Joe, trying to talk me into keeping the ol girl? :B
I purchased a 21' trailer last night with a dry weight of 3,560lbs. With an additional 1,000lbs of "stuff" it will be about 450lbs more than the camper was. It will actually be better on the truck for a number reasons. 1. It has it's own brakes, 2. the struts won't be pulling on the cowl of the body up and down, 3. towed weight from the frame is less stressful on the truck than the dead weight of a camper that is "attached" to the body of the truck by pocket tiedowns, etc. that twist and pull the body and tend to torque the frame more.
In any event, I think I will be happy with it. Probably buy another (newer) camper when I retire in 4 years...
Best,

Bye bye Old Lance.... :-(

Hi everybody,
You may have read a recent post where I noted the rotting problems in the corner of my old Lance (though I found it is not total and the jack is now re-installed tightly) I have worked on, spent a lot of time and money on and camped in and loved this camper for the last 7 years or so. Well, I have decided that even though I could do the work myself to replace the back corner, what with aging family member obligations, work, lack of time, and the fact that at this point I just cant'to do this anymore as a constant project, it's time to move on to something that is, 1.Easier on my truck, 2.larger with an actual bedroom again and 3. Newer without so many potential problems (I know, ANY RV will give you problems :B Soooooooo.... the camper is going. I am going to list it for sale on this site for dirt cheap to get rid of it fast....:(
I will miss it and have had a lot of good memories in it (remember the pictures of the Christmas lights on it?..) check out my pictures on the link below to the ol' girl... Hope someone else with more time and ambition can again bring her up to snuff. She should have more years of camping in her, but I just can't do it anymore and don't have the place to store it and work on it at my leisure. So it's on to .........dare I say it?!!..... a travel trailer!
Thanks for all the fun and information that I Have gleaned here during the years as a truck camper. This is the best forum I have EVER been involved in. Who knows, I may be back someday! :B
Best to all,

RE: What Makes Siding Warp and How Do I Fix It? - Pics.

As our older campers age I believe it is almost inevitable that water will find a way in and it seems you have a big projet ahead of you if you choose to take that route. :(
I am now in the same boat.
Unfortunately, after 8 years of work and lots of $, I recently discovered that another corner of my old Lance is rotted out and found dry rot in 2 kitchen cabinets on the back and side walls; and the last time it rained water was draining out of some screws on the underside of the cabover. It's starting to fall apart!! I am not happy of course and am at a corssroads of debating whether or not to find a place indoors (and the time!!)to completely strip the siding and roof off and completely re-build my old Lance or cut my losses, keep it covered and on the truck and try to keep using it until it totally falls apart and then buy another. Its a hard decision to make as I just don't want the payments of a new one and don't want to use my savings to pay cash for one as I am only 4 years away from retirement!
Boy Forrest, did you bring up a sore subject for me!!:M:W Best of luck on yours.. As I decide I will also post pictures of the carnage when I can.

RE: OLD CAMPERS (many photos included)

I'm one that also appreciates the past and all the wonderful, fun memories! I started with a 74 Lance cabover truck camper and since then have had many, many older and new trailers, fivers, and campers. I came back 8 years ago to the old stuff.... Though it's not a pull trailer or fiver, see the link below to my truck and camper
The main thing is KEEP ON KAMPIN!!

RE: PVC holder for "stinky slinky"

I didn't put anything on the ends. I drilled holes and put a bolt across each end. Holds the hose in and allows plenty of air inside. A nut on the end of the bolt keeps it from bouncing out.
I like that idea. No dirty, wet, or *&^%* end caps to deal with..

RE: Finally had enough with the convection oven!!

I don't think you will need a "tee" for the oven from your gas line. I believe only one line goes to a fitting for the whole range(like a gas range at home) and the "tee" is built into the range. It shouldn't be much of a problem (other than the cabinet modifications, but you seem to have that handled already)
Good luck!

RE: Burning RV Backs Into Police Car

http://www.rimoftheworld.net/columns/neufeld/motor
I live just up the highway from this incident. I know this area very well. If that motorhome had gone over the edge down the embankment into the forest (100s of feet below) while engulfed in flames (it was NOT just a berm with a gully below) it very well could have started a HUGE forest fire. Many homes and businesses in Running Springs and other small mountain communities are near there.
This was a very serious situation and the California Highway Patrol officer that positioned his car behind that burning rig is to be commended for his quick thinking. We are in a county area the county officers up here know the dangers and are trained (along with utilizing their own common sense) to minimize the impact of situations such as this, especially with fire. We have been forced to evacuate our homes twice in the last 5 years due to enormous forest fires and I can tell you that I and countless others are very much indebeted to this officer for his quick thinking and proactive approach. The cost of a patrol car as compared to hundreds (yes, hundreds) of homes is not even worth comparing. I can assure you that if you were to poll those of us that live up here you would find that we would all gladly take up a collection to pay for the car if that were the issue. I would assume the county has insurance to cover it and the owner of the motorhome has insurance on his rig....
A HUGE potential disaster was averted. I and many others up here thank God for that!!
Dak
Oh, and to the person that stated that simply placing a chock under the wheels would have stopped this....good luck on that. They burn and they melt. Even steel does when it gets hot enough.

RE: Medicine Cabinets (Looking for a good water-tight one)

Joe,
Why not just use what will fit, waterproof or not, and run your shower curtain around in front of it to protect it? That's how my Lance was set up from the factory, and I believe many others are also.

RE: Removable awning

How about one of the "bag" awnings like I have on my old Lance? I believe lots of pop-up camper trailers use them also. the whole bag slides on the awning rail and inside the bag is the rolled up awning, poles and ropes all contained in one. During those times I don't want to use it I just slide it off the awning rail and put it in the garage. Actually quite handy.

RE: Last minute Memorial Day weekend suggestions?

Cherry Lake I have been there in the fall and it is beautiful! I LOVE it.. Great fishing!
don't know how crowed it is this time of year though, as it is a forest campground and quite remote.
Have fun!

RE: Dump the AC for power vent

To the OP. I have the fantastic fan with cover. I removed a "swamp cooler" (bad idea in a camper!) from the roof and replaced it with the fan. I am sure the other brands are quality products also, but I have had EXCELLENT customer service from this company. They are known to have replaced parts on fans that are years out of warranty for nothing, including shipping, as they did for me. Just my experiences...
Good luck!

RE: California permanent plates - transfer to non-CA resident?

Why would any state issue a non-resident a license plate, driver's license, or anything else that is reserved for residents? However, since this is California we are talking about, all bets are off!!!!!!!!
Well, California is a kooky state, but actually quite strict on DMV regulations:W.
The permanent trailer "plate" on the cargo trailer the original poster is referring to would not actually be the plate, but the registration. It is a sticker that goes on the plate that specifies it is a permanent registration (you don't have to renew it anymore). However it is still in the name of last person to register it, so the new owner in AZ should get a new registration anyway. Even if one lived in CA they "should" re-register it in their own name. This is what I had to go through when I inherited an old army ammo supply trailer from Stepdad. I received a new sticker when I registered it.

RE: Update on purchase: Sales tax on used TC

Congratulations on the new truck and camper! When you get it all set up and go out for your first time you will SO love it! I am on my umpteenth (is that really a word?) camper. New and used through the years. The main focus in the end is not really the camper anyway, it's where you go and what you see. Any problems or modifications can be worked out. Just have fun and go out and see the USA! Happy camping!

RE: What size were the super-wide tires the 70s Fords had?

I didn't have the "Camper Special" model so I know I didn't have the 16.5 wheels. I am quite certain, especially after reading the other responses in this thread, that I did have 15" wheels. 12" wide in the back and 9" wide in the front. As already noted by someone else, I had a really hard time finding tire shops to mount tires on my rims.
When I bought Burt he still had 15" wheels on him also. After upgrading to 16.5, including the spare that's when I found out I would have to mount the spare on the front of the truck as it would rub against the exhaust pipe.
Joe, would upgrading all the wheels to steel 16.5" with "E" rated tires with todays' standards give you the weight handling you need?
